CONVERTING ROYAL TYPEWRITERS
WITH THE DIY KIT:
Royal Typewriters have their crossbars in an unusual place, and to top it off there is another metal bar obstructing it. For this reason, I STRONGLY suggest you use the Easy Install kit, and not the D.I.Y. kit, to convert your Royal typewriter, since it is specifically designed to overcome those challenges. On the other hand, while it is very difficult to install the D.I.Y. kit on Royal typewriters, it not impossible -- these instructions will show you how to use the D.I.Y. kit:

STEP 1: You will need to use a Dremel to cut the bar that is in your way in half (red arrow). Then unscrew the screw shown here with the blue arrow.

STEP 2: There is no convenient way to attach the Sensor Board directly to the crossbar on a Royal. Therefore it is a good idea to glue some supports to either side of the crossbar. You can then glue the Sensor Board to these supports. You can use hot glue (as shown here on the left) or with superglue gel (as shown here on the right). To make the supports, I use either .025 inch thick sheets of brass from my local art supply store, or I will use scrap PCB material from my electronics shop.

STEP 3: Notice that the contacts shown in this image are attached to the top of the Sensor Board -- not underneath it!
